Nanocomposite is a multiphase solid material where one of the phases has one, two or three dimensions of less than 100 nanometers, or structures having nano-scale repeat distance between the different phases that make up the material. A polymer is a large molecule, or macromolecule, composed of many repeated subunits. Polymer nanocomposites represent a new alternative to conventionally filled polymers. Because of their nanometer sizes, filler dispersion nanocomposites exhibit markedly improved properties when compared to the pure polymers or their traditional composites. These include increased modulus and strength, outstanding barrier properties, improved solvent and heat resistance and decreased flammability. Nanocomposites are an emerging class of polymeric materials exhibiting excellent mechanical properties, enhanced modulus and dimensional stability, flame retardancy, improved scratch and mar resistance, superior thermal and processing properties, reduced warpage of components and enhanced impact resistance making them suitable to replace metals in automotive and other applications. This book attempts to understand the multiple branches that fall under the discipline of nanocomposites and how such concepts have practical applications. It deals with polymer nanocomposites, antistatic applications and intercalated nanocomposites. It also explores functional graded structures, energy storage applications and flame retardant polymer nanocomposites. The various applications along with technological progress that have future implications are glanced at in it. Most of the topics introduced in this book cover new techniques and the applications of nanocomposites. Different approaches, evaluations and methodologies and advanced studies have been included in it. This book is meant for students who are looking for a detailed explanation of the technologies related to nanocomposites.
